Monkeyland

Monkeyland was one of my first pieces. It has a little bit of everything.

The body of the piece is made from a sewing machine carrying case. Inside the case is an illuminated card holder which displays one of several large flash cards included with the piece. (Unused cards are stored inside.) The front is cut out and fitted with reverse-painted glass to display the current card.

The title of the piece comes from the name of a song my wife and I found on a piece of sheet music when we were first hanging out. Along the front of the piece, “Monkeyland” is spelled out in typewriter keys.

Monkeyland is supported by four 1950s side table legs.

On the right side is a Seagrave pressure valve/indicator, and on the left side is a 1930s rotating wall switch that turns the lights on and off.

All switches and lamp sockets are period original. Wiring is reproduction cloth-covered cord to maintain original appearance while providing the safety of modern wiring.
